13 arrested over burning of Jonathan’s campaign buses

No fewer than 13 youths were arrested by operatives of the Special Task Force in Jos on Sunday in connection with the burning of President Goodluck Jonathan campaign buses.

The buses were set ablaze by the youths at Zololo by Mangu Street junction in Jos North Local Government Area.

The arrest of the youths came as a police post in the same area was set ablaze by some people, who were protesting the indiscriminate arrest of the youths by the soldiers attached to the STF on security in Jos.

Plateau State Police Commissioner, Mr. Nasiru Oki, however told our correspondent in a telephone interview that only two youths were arrested in the early hours of Sunday by soldiers deployed in the area.

He said those arrested were yet to be handed over to the police, adding that the suspected arsonists would be charged to court as soon as they were handed over to the police and investigations had been concluded.

Our correspondent gathered that many of the youths from the area were arrested by soldiers who went to restore law and order following the burning down of the police post in Mangu street.

Among those arrested, it was learnt, were two underage boys.

A source in STF told our correspondent that they would be handed over to the police after preliminary investigation to determine their level of involvement in the incident.
