Start work on second Niger bridge - Onitsha people

The Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, has said the people and residents of Onitsha are eager to see the commencement of work on the second Niger Bridge at Onitsha.

Achebe spoke while hosting the management team of Julius Berger Nigeria PLC, the major contractors for the construction of the bridge at his palace.

Describing the bridge as “our dream and passion,” the traditional ruler said the old bridge was overburdened and giving way already. The old bridge was built 50 years ago by the Abubakar Balewa government.

The Julius Berger team was led by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Detlev Lubasch, and a member of its board of directors, Igwe Peter Anugwu, the Eze Amosu of Mbaukwu.

The Public Affairs Advisor of the company, Mr. Clement Ilobi said the management of the company visited to enlist their support and friendship of the Onitsha community in the work on the N117 billion projects that is being
undertaken under a Private-Public Partnership scheme.

Achebe reminded the team that the Niger River and the bridge was very important to the people, and therefore expected a lot from Julius Berger.

He promised that the community would provide all the needed support the contractors need to execute the project.

“We are on ground. We will do our best to ensure reasonable approach and reasonable cooperation.

“Anything you need to make your work go on is guaranteed. We will like you to give us a focal person with whom we will interact where there is an issue to thrash out. I will give you my phone number so we can interact,” the obi said.

However, Igwe Achebe told the leader of the team that since he knows the company will generate employment the community looks forward to the company engaging and training members of the community who are educated to the extent that in future they will grow to head the company.
