Some Big Brother enthusiasts in Nigeria on Wednesday reacted, saying the Africa reality show had only succeeded in promoting the western ethos which were detrimental to African culture.
The Big Brother is a reality television show in which a group of people are brought together in a large house, isolated from the outside world.
They are made to live together while being continuously watched by television cameras.
In the Big Brother television show, the confined contestants compete to avoid eviction so as to win the prize money.
The reality concept was introduced from the western world into the African culture to see how it could help in promoting and preserving it, but has proven otherwise, as enthusiasts say.
Juliet Chinwendu, a business woman, who claims to be addicted to watching big brother, said that the programme did not in any way portray African culture.
“The programme Big Brother Africa is supposed to promote and preserve African culture, but the participants have westernised it.
“It doesn’t showcase African culture. I was meant to understand that Africans are known for modesty and not nudity.
“The dressing and lifestyle of the participants in the programme is just an imitation of the western culture which is in contrast with the African culture.
“Big Brother Africa turned to be a romantic escapade, full of immorality and promiscuity. I must say that the programme only promotes unity among Africans but does not preserve the African culture,” she said.
Another big brother addict, Augustina Osato said the medium was to promote African unity but it does not preserve its cultural heritage in any way.
“The activities in Big Brother Africa do not preserve our cultural heritage in any form.
“As a matter of fact, the idea of the show is probably put together by some group of persons whose intention is to make money through entertainment.
“Their intention, I guess is not to promote African culture because it is possible that the organisers or initiator have little or no idea about African culture.
“Big Brother Africa television reality show is an avenue for young African youths to explore their talents in whatever way they feel they can.
“It is a medium to promote African unity but it does not preserve our cultural heritage in any way because the way the ladies dress to expose their bodies is not African in nature.
“And sometimes their sexual activities are shown live on the screen but Africans believe that sexual intercourse ought to be a secret thing,” she said.
A youth corper, Felicia Chukwuka, told NAN that the show was supposed to showcase Africa’s richness to the world.
“But most of what we see is female housemate, drink, smoke and get drunk and strip in front of live cameras.
“And the male appear with all sorts of hair styles and tattoos all over their body. They do all sorts of things like immorality, nudity and unimaginable attitude that are not tolerated in Africa.
`Although it unites the people of Africa by making contestant from different countries to stay together in an isolated house without any racial discrimination.
“Africans are known to be responsible in all their doings but this show has proven otherwise. Even children are not allowed to watch the show because of the high rate of nudity.
“However, we should not forget that it’s business for those behind it and in the world, what comes first is profit therefore, what sells is what is aired.
“We should note that it is not in all cases that we should allow finance to come first.
“Those people behind this should for once think of promoting African culture not the western culture. To this end, I will say Big Brother Africa has not promoted Africa culture the way it should. (NAN)
