Reps want killing of Nigerians in Dubai probed

The House of Representatives on Wednesday asked the Federal Government to “thoroughly” investigate the rising killing of Nigerians in Dubai.

It said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nigerian Embassy in Dubai should conduct the investigation within one month and report back to the House.

The House passed the resolution following a motion it received on the latest death of the son of a former Governor of Bayelsa State, Mr. Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, in Dubai.

The motion was sponsored by the Chairman, House Committee on Diaspora Affairs, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa.

The House said it was disturbed that the circumstances surrounding the death of the 24-year-old, Oyoms, were conflicting and unclear.

It noted that while one account indicated that he died on the staircase of his father’s house, another claimed that he was killed at a different location.

While leading the debate on the motion, Dabiri-Erewa told the House that the conflicting accounts pointed to an attempt to cover up what appeared to be murder.

She recalled that the killing of Toba, the son of sports Journalist, Aisha Falode, in the same Dubai a few months back, took after a similar pattern.

Erewa said, “Alamieyeseigha’s son was a student in Dubai and he died in mysterious circumstances.
“Some reports said he committed ‎suicide but apparent information seems to suggest he must have been murdered.

“Just a few months ago, Toba, the son of Aisha Falode, also a student, was killed in mysterious circumstances.
“The case has not been investigated by the Dubai authorities
.”

Dabiri-Erewa also recalled that besides the recent two cases, “a number of deaths of Nigerians have occurred in Dubai” without investigation.

The lawmaker argued that so long as Nigeria was silent on the death of its citizens in “unexplainable ‎circumstances” in foreign lands, suck killings would merely continue.

“The House demands full investigation into the death of the two Nigerians and others reported to have died in Dubai”, Dabiri-Erewa said.

Members passed the motion unanimously without further debate.

The session was presided over by the Speaker, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal.
